a: (Latin): Emperor Caesar Vespasian Augustus, pontifex maximus, holding tribunician power for the fourth time, acclaimed imperator for the eighth time, father of the fatherland, consul four times, designated for a fifth time, through his personal envoy Q(uintus) Paconius Agrippinus restored the garden to the Roman People.

b: (Greek): Emperor Caesar Vespasian, pontifex maximus, holding tribunician power for the third time, acclaimed imperator for the eighth time, father of the fatherland, consul four times, designated for a fifth time, through his personal envoy K(ointos) Pakonios Agrippeinos restored the garden to the Roman People.

Commentary

Though the letters are more carefully cut than on most boundary stelae, there is clear evidence of careless copying, cf. the inconsistency in the trib. pot. number as given in the Latin (l. 3) and the Greek version (l. 12), the omission of Paconius' cognomen in line 5 and the title Σεβαστός in line 9

Vespasian was trib. pot. III from 1st July 71 to 30th June 72 and trib. pot. IIII in the following year, held his fourth consulship from 1st Jan. 72 and his fifth from 1st Jan. 74, was imperator VIII late in 71 and imperator IX during 72; the date of inscription should therefore be the first half of 72 - and as Oliverio pointed out the cutter has erred over the trib. pot. number in the Latin version

Q. Paconius Agrippinus, for whom see PIR2 P 0027, was active in Cyrenaica under Vespasian, 71-74 CE: see C.147, C.428, C.429, C.430, C.438, C.747, M.68, M.165, M.229, M.230, M.232, M.238, M.239, P.397.
