IRCyr   Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica

T.219. Fragment of imperial edict of Anastasios I.

Description: Block of sandstone (w: 1.10 x h: 0.36 x d: 0.44) from a wall carrying a copy of the decree of Anastasius, de rebus Libyae Pentapolis denuo constituendis. The surface has deteriorated considerably since its discovery.
Text: Inscribed on one face which was already faulty, requiring the masons to avoid substantial gaps; the initial in line 2 perhaps indicates that this is the third block in the inscribed group.
Letters: Irregular lettering; gamma in line 2 0.04, all others 0.02; Ϲ for digamma, bar above the figures in line 6; lunate epsilon and sigma; cursive omega; the cutter has had to avoid holes in the stone.

Date: CE 491-518

Findspot: Taucheira: South area of the city, in a garden near the former Fortino Perrone; recorded in 1936
Original location: Unknown.
Last recorded location: Tocra Museum

Apparatus

1-9: The supplements are provided from the fullest version of the text, at Ptolemais, P.116, lines 49-83. They may not necessarily continue the surviving text; if the letter at the beginning of line 2 is a number (3) for the block, this might in fact represent the end of the lines. The vacats represents substantial holes in the stone
6: κδ , it is possible that Ρ has been added above the line, giving 124.
8: στρατευσίμου Oliverio, DAI, 1933-1936
9: το[ῖς] αυτοῖς Oliverio, DAI, 1933-1936

Commentary

For another, very fragmentary, copy at Apollonia, see A.30, and, for the fullest text, at Ptolemais, P.116. A full edition with translation and commentary is under preparation by Denis Feissel; we are most grateful to him for access to his preliminary account.

It is clear that there was a considerable military force at Teucheira in the time of Anastasius and possible that the Late Fort was originally constructed for it.
