Commentary

For the building and its texts see on T.27.

The wall was seen in 1817 by Della Cella (p.210), in 1821-22 by the Beecheys (pp.370 ff), and in 1825 by Pacho (p. 184) and excavated in 1962-6. Pacho transcribed many of its texts, far more than have survived (see T.50 to T.74) and it is clear that in his time more courses stood in position than now. Loss and scattering of texts began already in late antiquity, cf. the appearance of a number of blocks with similar texts within the Byzantine Baths and in the city wall; it may be presumed that all the known texts of this highly individual type came from the building.
