Translation by: Editors

By the command of the Emperor Domitianus Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Pontifex Maximus, holding tribunician power for the eighth time, Father of the fatherland, consul for the fourteenth time, perpetual censor: C. Pomponius Gallus Didius Rufus, the proconsul, restored this place, which had been occupied by private individuals, to the city of Ptolemais.

Commentary

Line 5: C. Pomponius Gallus Didius Rufus, PIR2, P 0716, Thomassen, Laterculi 38.032.

Kraeling, pp. 10, 58, 113, 115, confused this stele with P.397, and infered from it the existence of a royal estate to the west of the city, which cannot be accepted on this evidence.

The text shows Domitian pursuing the policy of restoration of city lands of his predecessors; cf also C.16.
