Commentary

The script looks to be third or fourth century, perhaps rather better formed than that of M.177, the religious regulations from Balagrae. This document, unfortunately fragmentary and not precisely connected with any building, appears to be a formal instruction concerned with the proper and respectful organisation of pagan cults (a.3, θρησκεία: on the sense see Robert, Études épigraphiques et philologiques, p. 226 f., perhaps after desecration (a.2,, e.4 πλημμελουμεν[ . . . . Expiatory offerings were apparently involved (c.2, ἱλάσκεσθαι) A name has been erased (a.4), ending in -anos, and it is of course tempting to think of the emperor Julian; but the rest of the text is undisturbed, while an erasure of Julian's name might be expected to be accompanied by erasure of references to pagan practices.
