M.74. Funerary inscription

Description: A quarry with three rock-cut tombs cut into a quarry, with M.71 on the east wall, M.72 on the south wall, M.73 on the west wall and M.74 on the north wall.
Text: Inscribed at an angle across one of the vertical faces left by the quarrying process.
Letters: average 0.175; roughly cut

Date: Second to third centuries CE

Findspot: Sites between Berenike and Taucheira: quarry-necropolis of Hadrianopolis, on the rock face at the northern side of the quarry. First recorded probably in 1924.

Commentary

The impression is of a cutter's mark made on a piece of stone about to be extracted from the quarry, but in fact left in position.
