M.69. Funerary text

Description: Red sandstone panel with roughly rounded projection (to recall a head?) on top (w: 0.19 x h: 0.30 x d: 0.07).
Text: Inscribed on one face which is slightly convex.
Letters: 0.02-0.03. lunate sigma, omega; irregular.

Date: First century BCE-first century CE

Findspot: Sites between Berenike and Taucheira: Bu Maryam, about 1200m from the well, on a small hill covered with stones (so Oliverio's notes), which implies a populous ancient settlement; found before 1941.
Original location: Unknown.
Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, inventory no. 303 (Inv. no. 303)

Commentary

Line 1: Mecheir 20 = February 14. Oliverio suggested an Actian date, 12/11 BCE, or a regnal year of Tiberius (so 24 AD); dating to a second century emperor is not supported by the lettering.

Line 3: The name may be Nemenis
