IRCyr   Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica

M.290. Funerary inscription

Description: Roughly prepared limestone stele damaged above: w: 0.12 x h: 0.18 x d: 0.09. It has probably lost a central projection above, but shows sllight ones on either side.
Text: Inscribed on one face which also carries pairs of parallel lines running across it near the top and the bottom, presumably in imitation of moulding. Line 1 is cut above the upper pair of lines.
Letters: Roughly cut, 0.018- 0.02; lunate epsilon and sigma.

Date: First to second century CE

Findspot: Gebel Akhdar: East of Cyrene: Chersis; cemetery.

Commentary

Line 3: Ζηνοῦ may be a form of the feminine name Ζηνώ; but, as Dobias-Lalou points out (loc.cit.) it might also be from a feminine Ζηνοῦς, which has lost its final sigma.

Line 4: ἔτουϲ is presumably an error, using the term found in dates for the normal term for age, ἔτων
