C.646. Funerary inscriptions

Description: Limestone stele tapering towards the top with moulding above (w: 0.36-0.325 x h: 0.84 x d: 0.19).
Text: Inscribed on one face which is damaged at the right side. There is a wreath in relief below the text.
Letters: Well cut, first-second cent; line 1-3, 0.03, lines 4ff 0.04; two different hands; square sigma, L for ἔτους, ἐτῶν.

Date: 79-85 CE

Findspot: Cyrene: Necropolis, precise location unspecified; found between 1972 and 1974.

Year 101, Hagemo[na] (scil. daughter) of Kallik[rates], aged ?50. Year 125, Pelea (scil. daughter) of Arimmas, aged ?.

Commentary

Line 2: There is hardly room for a longer name than is supplied; other names such as Καλλικ[λέους] are possible.

Line 7: The age is in effect lost.
