C.394. Fragmentary list of priests of Apollo

Description: Damaged stele consisting of two marble blocks standing side by side, one (with C.394) now in two fragments, one broken away below, and the other (with C.393) hollowed out at the back (w: 0.75 x h: 0.88 x d: 0.64). There are dowel holes on top presumably for the attachment of other blocks.
Text: Inscribed across the two blocks; the lower left side and two-thirds of the right side are lost; each entry in a different hand. C.393 is inscribed on the right side of the right hand block.
Letters: First-second century: ave. 0.04; small round stop after T in line 2.

Date: First - second century CE

Findspot: Cyrene: In the Sanctuary, area of the Fountain of Apollo; First recorded in 1817; apparently (see photo below) located in 1927 with C.248.
Original location: Unknown
Last recorded location: Standing in front of the Temple of Hekate (2008).

Commentary

The different hands suggest that the text is a running record of eponymus priests of Apollo; but it is clear that the record was not kept systematically and that the entries are not in all cases consecutive.
