M.32. Fragmentary building inscription

Description: Fragmentary sandstone block (w: 0.65 x h: 0.60 x d: 0.19).
Text: Inscribed on one face.
Letters: 0.23; very elaborate serifs. The height and the width of the trenches (0.02) seems to indicate monumental lettering.

Date: Probably first century CE

Findspot: South of Berenike: Corniclanum/Ajdabia, re-used in the Fatimid Mosque; found 1970 by Abdulhamid Abdussaid.
Original location: Perhaps from a fort.
Last recorded location: Findspot: lying loose.

Commentary

It is natural to expect some part of Αὐτοκράτωρ but there is no trace of Ο to the left, although the surface appears to survive to a sufficient extent.
