M.146. Funerary inscription

Description: Brown limestone stele with a moulding, now damaged, at about 0.18 below the top; total w: 0.305 x h: 0.72 x d: 0.17.
Text: Inscribed on the face below the moulding, which is worn. On the face above the moulding two incised lines run approximately from the upper corners slantwise across the face to approximately the central point on the line of the moulding and lines have been incised along the moulding to simulate more elaborate decoration.
Letters: Freehand letters, first-second century A,D, 0.035-0.04; lunate sigma, roughly cut between strongly marked guide-lines.

Date: First to second centuries CE

Findspot: Gebel Akhdar: East of Cyrene: Umm Heneia on the upper plateau. Found in 1963.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum.

. . . Th]oth, Bales (i.e. Valens) (scil. son) of Rouphos (i.e. Rufus), aged 40.

Commentary

The first line presumably contained the date; the traces of the last two letters which are all that remain are consistent with θώ]θυ (the month Thoth), but there is no sign of a figure to follow.
