C.661. Fragmentary dedication for a ?statue

Description: More than thirty fragments of a large marble panel made up of adjoining sections.
Text: Inscribed on one face. Sufficient adjoining pieces survive to prove that there were four lines of text, and that the panel was at least 8.66m wide.

For the victory and permanence of the Em[perors Marcus Aurelius Antoninus] and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, [Augusti]: Ti(berios) Klaudios (i.e. Ti(berius) Claudius) Ia[son] M[agnos eponymous priest] of Apollo the Founder, constructed the temple from the foundations and the statue of Cyrene, the metropolis, with all its adornment, from his own funds, for his dearest fatherland. [the consecration was made by -]anos the most excellent proconsul with [. . -]us Capito Veranianus [ . . . ] and legate [ . . .

Commentary

We propose this restoration based largely on C.306, which is certainly very closely related. The more dubious points in it are: a) the dedicator's cognomina. We have taken him to be the Ti. Claudius Jason Magnus of no. C.306 and allocated to the appropriate positions fragments containing groups of letters that might be part of this name. b) the identification of the statue as one of Cyrene. This depends on the fact that the last word in line 2 must be from Κυράνα since the ματρόπολις follows at the beginning of line 3, and on the assuption that very few letters are missing at the ends of the lines.
